چکیده

We carried out spectroscopic and photometric observations of the candidate black-hole binary GX 339?4 during its low-hard and high-soft X-ray states. We have found that the emission lines from GX 339?4 have asymmetric, apparently round-topped prooles in the low-hard state (1997 May), and double-peaked prooles in the high-soft state (1998 April and August). Our data do not show obvious velocity modulations of the emission lines from the compact object, nor any absorption lines from the secondary star. The B and V light-curves in a high-soft state (1998 May, July and August) show variations by several tenths of a magnitude around a mean value of B 17:3, V 16:5, on timescales of a few hours. Observations during a low-hard state (1999 February) yield B 18:0, V 17:1. GX 339?4 is likely to have a low-mass secondary and a low orbital inclination.

Multi-wavelength Observations of the 2002 Outburst of Gx 339–4: Two Patterns of X-ray–optical/near-infrared Behavior

We report on quasi-simultaneous Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer and optical/near-infrared (nIR) observations of the black hole candidate X-ray transient GX 339–4. Our observations were made over a time span of more than eight months in 2002 and cover the initial rise and transition from a hard to a soft spectral state in X-rays. Two distinct patterns of correlated X-ray–optical/nIR behavior were fo...

Multiwavelength Observations of GX 339 – 4 in 1996 . III . Keck Spectroscopy

As part of our multiwavelength campaign of observations of GX 339–4 in 1996 we present our Keck spectroscopy performed on May 12 UT. At this time, neither the ASM on the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer nor BATSE on the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory detected the source. The optical emission was still dominated by the accretion disk with V ≈ 17 mag. The dominant emission line is Hα, and for the first...

Evidence for Black Hole Spin in Gx 339-4: Xmm-newton Epic-pn and Rxte Spectroscopy of the Very High State

We have analyzed spectra of the Galactic black hole GX 339−4 obtained through simultaneous 76 ksec XMMNewton/EPIC-pn and 9 ksec RXTE observations during a bright phase of its 2002–2003 outburst. An extremely skewed, relativistic Fe Kα emission line and ionized disk reflection spectrum are revealed in these spectra. Selfconsistent models for the Fe Kα emission line profile and disk reflection sp...

Optical Spectroscopy of GX 339−4 during the High-Soft and Low-Hard States

We carried out spectroscopic observations of the candidate black hole binary GX 339−4 during its low-hard and high-soft X-ray states. We have found that the spectrum is dominated by emission lines of neutral elements with asymmetric, roundtopped profiles in the low-hard state. In the high-soft state, however, the emission lines from both neutral and ionised elements have unambiguously resolved ...

GX 339–4 is an unusual black hole candidate in that it is a persistent source, being detected by X-ray telescopes most of the time, but it also has nova-like flaring states. In 1996 we performed radio, optical, X-ray, and gamma-ray observations of GX 339–4 when it was in a hard state (= soft X-ray low state). Here we present a brief summary of some of the results. At this time, neither the ASM ...
